This will keep a copy in the OneDrive cloud but not on your local PC. Once you click on the file again it will re-download to your PC and be accessible locally. If you want to put that file back in the OneDrive cloud, select the file and choose &#8220;free up space&#8221; again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2809 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/onedrive-windows-11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/onedrive-windows-11.png 498w, https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/onedrive-windows-11-291x300.png 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Using OneDrive On Demand File Ma<\/strong><b>nagement<\/b><\/p>\n<p>OneDrive has several different ways of managing your files. It can keep files only on your local PC, only in the Cloud or a combination of both. The information below explains how each option works, when you might use it and how to toggle between them to most efficiently manage your files to optimize space and accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>You will see icons to the right of your one drive files. Below are the different file statuses represented by those icons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2927 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"19\" height=\"21\" \/>A blue cloud icon next to a OneDrive file or folder indicates that the file is only available online.\u00a0<i class=\"ocpItalic\">Online-only files<\/i>\u00a0don\u2019t take up space on your computer. You see a cloud icon for each online-only file in File Explorer, but the file doesn\u2019t download to your device until you open it. You can\u2019t open online-only files when your device isn\u2019t connected to the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2926 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"35\" \/>When you open an online-only file, it downloads to your device and becomes a\u00a0<i class=\"ocpItalic x-hidden-focus\">locally available file<\/i>. You can open a locally available file anytime, even without Internet access. If you need more space, you can change the file back to online only. Just right-click the file and select \u201cFree up space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2928 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"32\" \/>Only files that you mark as &#8220;Always keep on this device&#8221; have the green circle with the white check mark.
