{"id":91,"date":"2009-10-02T13:01:38","date_gmt":"2009-10-02T19:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.natsci.colostate.edu\/bioit\/?p=91"},"modified":"2021-08-16T16:30:13","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T22:30:13","slug":"taking-it-to-netbook-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/taking-it-to-netbook-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking it to Netbook City!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is a Netbook<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Netbooks are the term applied to ultra portable laptop computers which in turn come with a low price tag; typically, under $400.\u00a0 The low price means that these devices are comparably underpowered for the operations a more expensive &#8220;laptop&#8221; or desktop computer could typically handle.\u00a0 The ultra portable part means that these devices are very small, usually a 10&#8243; screen or even smaller.\u00a0 Powered by an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intel_Atom\">Intel Atom<\/a> processor, these low power chips are great for battery life &#8211; as some netbook specifications boast 10+ hours of life on a single charge.\u00a0 These devices are great for Internet, photo and video viewing, social networking, and basic applications.\u00a0 Just don&#8217;t expect to do anything heavy like Photoshop or video editing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\" wp-image-181  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1005ha-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"1005ha\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1005ha-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1005ha-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cnsit.colostate.edu\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1005ha.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am aware of at least a few of these devices in the building &#8211; and anticipate more.\u00a0 In fact, I just recently picked up an Asus 1005HA model (shown above).\u00a0 This $300 machine is replacing an aging Apple Powerbook G4 12&#8243;.\u00a0 A netbook was attractive to me because of its ultra-portability, long battery life, and low purchase price.\u00a0 For my purposes I will be running Windows 7 32bit RC and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu Linux Netbook Remix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took me only a couple of hours to follow these dual booting directions (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bauer-power.net\/2009\/06\/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu.html\">http:\/\/www.bauer-power.net\/2009\/06\/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu.html<\/a>).\u00a0 I use the Windows 7 side for the majority of my work on this device &#8211; Word, Excel, and web browsing.\u00a0 The Ubuntu side is available so that I can program of course.<\/p>\n<p>The important thing to remember about these little devices is that they are UNDERPOWERED.\u00a0 Just like any low cost traditional laptop or cheap desktop setup &#8211; they are noticably slower when doing anything other than browsing the web and using services or resources that exist on the web.\u00a0 However, I would say that close to 90% of what I do on computers happens within a web browser.\u00a0 E-mail, Social Networking, Netflix &#8211; these services all exist in the &#8220;Cloud&#8221; &#8211; and with more and more services popping up online, netbooks seem like a good and affordable way to access these resources from wherever you are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Netbook?
